Beautiful Ladyboy prostitutes, monks in saffron robes, shrines to Buddha and Ganesh, the smell of cooking and incense everywhere. This is my journey so far. From a naïve tourist falling in love with the wrong kind of girl to turning my back on Thailand’s night-life, discovering Thai culture and finding a ladyboy I could trust.Together, Annie and I featured in ‘Ladyboys’, Sky Living Television’s acclaimed documentary series. What happened behind the scenes and how it confirmed my life choices as well as shedding light on the transgender community in Thailand makes up a part of the story.Read more about what Annie and I are doing now and everything you need to know about Thai Ladyboys at:www.davidbonnie.comBook Bangkok Baby - The Inside Story of Ladyboys: The acclaimed TV documentary series Review :
Perhaps like many of you, I first became aware of David Bonnie because of his appearance on the BBC documentary "Ladyboys". Subsequently, I subscribed to his youtube channel (entitled "The Real Ladyboy Show"), where I began to get more of a sense of the personality, the life, and the world-view of Mr. Bonnie. I found him to be a fascinating person, full of wit and wisdom born of experience. First hand, real-world experience born of a deep-dive into the world of Thai ladyboys. With that background, i purchased his book.First things first. If you read the other reviews you will see that several folks derided Mr. Bonnie somewhat for things like syntax, punctuation, and proof-reading. These are legitimate observations, and I found several. (David, if you read this, and if you write a second book, please allow me to first read the manuscript and assist you in proofreading). However, I did not find these off-putting, but rather that they lent themselves to a certain cadence or mood. You see, the book is not necessarily a blow-by-blow (no pun intended) matter-of-fact chronology of his experiences, though those are indeed in the book. Rather, it is a fascinating exploration into the mind of a man who has stepped well outside the societal norms of his native England to......follow his heart. Follow his lust. Follow his dream. As you read, think of yourself as a trusted friend "back home" with whom Mr. Bonnie is having a correspondence. He is a stranger in a strange land. He's not trying to win you over to his way of thinking at all, but in his isolation, pens his thoughts about what he is experiencing both physically and psychologically. It is sometimes titillating, sometimes confusing, sometimes painful. His heart was broken and he tells the story of his personal abyss well.Because i chose to look at the book this way, as almost a personal correspondence from one friend to another, he is to be forgiven for any technical errors in grammar, etc. I can almost see him writing after a long night of debauchery in which he is writing through the fog of a hangover. Perhaps sometimes he writes as he is drinking. Happens. These things do not detract from the constant awareness that he is truly an adventurer. An openly admitted ladyboy lover.Men who love trans-women have been relegated to the shadows and perceived as pervy people who are outliers. Based on my own travels to Thailand, and as a person who shares this interest with David, I have discovered that they are often well educated, well travelled, have long identified as "straight" (until ladyboy fever surprisingly erupted in them), and are far from the porn-store trenchcoat crowd with which they are associated. Akin to those early gay pioneers who "came out of the closet", and whose courage cannot be underestimated in how they blazed a trail for gay people today, I think of David as one of those pioneers. Bringing awareness, and especially humanity, to this heretofore unknown counter-culture. A vibrant counter-culture.I recommend the book. Look past the loopy, alcohol-fueled passages, and explore the mind of a bonafide adventurer. And David, if you read this. Thank you especially for page 162. Lucky man, you. Book doesn't flow so well. It's hard to try to decipher the author's message. He tends to speak in a lot of metaphors a lot of which I can't relate to. He has a show which I follow on youtube, and although he has some very good information and advice, his book like his show tend to drone on and on about the LBs as if these individuals' lives are more complicated than the others who live theirs in the periphery of society. To me, like all relationships, there will be those who will accept and those who will not, and how you choose to deal with that or not....I could've said that in the prologue.
